This painting depicts a woman with orange yellow color hair sitting topless in a wing chair or maybe in a couch. The rest of her body is covered either by a black dress or blanket. The artist portrayed this woman with a haunting, piercing glance emanating from her eyes. Her glance is the type which almost seems to follow a person who shifts position while viewing the painting.  The woman and chair are portrayed as being in a room with maroon color walls and a window or door through which green trees or hedges are visible outside. An interesting contrast is provided by a blue and pale green highlighted brilliant white item which looks like a carpet past her feet.  I am not sure what the bright orange area is which extends along adjacent  to and slightly behind part of the black dress covering the woman’s legs but it looks like an extension of the chair. There is a table at the left side edge of the painting which extends towards the window and a side table with fruit or some other bright color objects on it situated between the wing chair and the right side edge of the painting. The painting is not signed in the front. The name Roberts is written by hand on the wood stretcher to which the painting is stapled and might be the name of the artist or maybe just the name of a prior owner of this work. There is no date on the painting.
The painting is executed in oil on canvas attached to a wood stretcher. The wood stretcher measures 20 inches high by 24 inches wide. The wood stretcher is in a wood spacer. The wood spacer with the stretcher and attached painting are in a wood frame with outside edges that measure approximately 27 1/4 inches high by 31 3/8 inches wide.
The condition of the painting is generally good. There are some items which look like probable flaws with the most significant being a group of white areas occurring at intervals down the left side edge of the painting. These white color places mainly are in the first 7 1/2 inches extending from the top left corner down the left side to almost the midpoint of that side. Initially I thought that these intermittent areas were the result of abrasions which exposed the white canvas under the maroon background color, but upon looking at them again, I cannot decide if they instead are white paint on the surface of the canvas.  Where these white areas are present, most extend from the left edge of the painting for 1/4 inch or so towards the right, although there is one located a bit further into the painting about 1 1/2 inches towards the right. The other places on the painting where a bit of white occurs apparently on top of another color in the upper right sided of the scene seem to be painted that way and not the result of abrasion. Additionally, there appears to be a thin white scratch across the exposed stomach area of the woman, but because of the light colors used to paint that area, the white scratch is not that noticeable. The wood spacer likewise is in generally good condition. It has a narrow wood inner border about 1/4 inch wide which is painted a dull gold color, providing an inner border to the painting on each of its sides. That dull gold surface is intact except for a scrape about 1 inch long on the left side at a point where the left end of the maroon color table begins at the left edge of the painting. The spacer also has a light tan color woven fabric cover on its front surface which forms a border around the painting on all four sides. The woven surface has just two slight flaws. One is a dark spot about 10 1/2 inches to the right of the bottom left corner. The other is a light brown spot on the right side at a height equivalent to the shoulder of the woman. The wood frame which holds the stretcher and painting is in satisfactory condition. That frame has a raised beaded inner border which is covered along with the not too wide flat area on which it rests with a dark brown surface finish. A few of the raised beads on the left side are chipped or have been rubbed in some manner, but the majority of the raised beaded inner border is in good shape. Extending outward from that dark finished raised beaded border is a portion of the frame surface which appears to have a plain mahogany finish and after extending outward curves up towards the viewer of the painting. That plain mahogany middle frame area on all sides is in good condition. At the top of the outer edge of the frame facing the viewer is another area which has been finished in a dark brown. That last portion of the frame has numerous scrapes on the upper left and upper right sides and along the top. The scrapes expose the wood underneath the surface finish. That exposed wood seems to be a mahogany color.  It might be possible to use a dab of a mahogany color restore type product to darken the lighter exposed mahogany color on those side and top areas of the outer edge of the frame to make them less noticeable, but I have not attempted to do so.
