Description
Pawnee County leases began before statehood and until 1923 recorded in this abstract. The list of over 50 family names is historically interesting and may provide a researcher valuable information including the documents attached. About 60 pages. Cover is interesting. While history shows that the Original Americans were granted land during the early 1900s to open up the Indian Territory for white settlement it also indicates that much of the awarded land was sold then to white land owners who put together huge land holdings as did the Mounts and Clements families. These holding then became the source of huge cattle operations and very soon large oil fields. This made the new owners very wealthy.
For example one oil lease states the owner will get 1/8 of the value of oil pumped at the current market rate plus all the free gas they might want. Roughly this might amount to a 100 barrels pumped a day paying 50 cent each to the land owner at a time when most working folks might make a dollar a day. That is a guess from one well. What if there were two hundred on the property? Researcher will know the numbers and this is only a guess.
